Piano divisions

Stipulations

Regarding the Carol Honigberg Piano Young Artist Award:

  • Applicants must reside or attend school in the Midwest (North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio).

  • Applicants will be notified of their advancement to the live round by January 15th, 2020.

  • There will be a performance for the Young Artist first place winner, details TBD.


Repertoire Requirements

Please determine the appropriate division according to your age as of December 15th, 2019.

All repertoire must be memorized unless indicated otherwise.

Unless specified in the repertoire requirements, no repeats are to be taken. However, D.C. & D.S. should be taken. When specific editions are recommended, participants must use those editions. If no edition is listed, please use modern editions, avoiding heavily edited editions.

PRIMARY (Age 10 and under)

  • J.S. Bach: Little Prelude in F Major, BWV 927
    (Easy Classics to Moderns, Volume 17) 

  • P.I. Tchaikovsky: Mazurka, Op.39 No.10

  • M. Clementi: Sonatina, Op.36 No.2, Movement 3

JUNIOR (Age 13 and under)

  • J.S. Bach: Prelude in B-flat Major from Well-Tempered Clavier Book 1, BWV 866

  • F. Mendelssohn: Venetian Boat Song from Song Without Words, Op.30 No.6

  • B. Bartók: Sonatina, Movement 1 or 3

INTERMEDIATE (Age 16 and under)

  • One of the following:

    • D. Scarlatti: Sonata in D minor, K.9

    • D. Scarlatti: Sonata in F minor, K.466  

  • W.A. Mozart: Sonata in A Minor, K.310, Movement 1

  • C. Debussy: Snow is Dancing from Children’s Corner

Senior (Age 19 and under)

  • The first movement from one of the following Haydn Sonatas:

    • Sonata in C minor, Hob. XVI. 20

    • Sonata in Ab Major, Hob. XVI. 46 

  • Any Prelude and Fugue by Bach from Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1 or 2

    • except Book 1 C Major, BWV 846 and Book 1 B Flat Major, BWV 866

  • Choose from the following:

    • C. Debussy: L’isle Joyeuse

    • C. Debussy: Toccata from Pour Le Piano

    • C. Debussy: Feux D’artifice from Préludes Book II

Pre-screening round

  • Tapes submitted with applications must be received by December 15th. Please note that late applications will not be accepted for this division.

  • Videos must be uploaded to Youtube and links must be shared through the application.

  • Repertoire:

    • Any Prelude and Fugue by Bach, Well-Tempered Clavier Book 1 or 2

    • Any Etude by Chopin

Live round

  • Any Etude by Chopin 

    • except Op.10 No.3 and Op.25 No.7, and any of the Op. Posth. 

  • The first movement of a Sonata by Schubert or Beethoven 

    • except Beethoven Sonata Op.27 No.2 and Beethoven Sonata Op.13 

  • A 20th- or 21st-century piece written after 1950 not exceeding 7 minutes in length

  • Any romantic work from 5-8 minutes in length, excluding sonatas

    • Examples: Chopin Ballades, Brahms Intermezzi, etc.
